Keeping your mouth clean and healthy may start with good oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing. However, professional dental cleanings and exams are important and recommended at least twice a year. The tools used during your cleanings are listed and explained below.

Mirrors
One of the most important tools used is a dental mirror. A dental mirror allows our dentist or hygienist to examine the lingual surfaces of the teeth as well as examine the gum tissue in the back of your mouth. Using the light from above reflecting off the mirror can make it easier to identify calculus deposits.

Scalers
An ultrasonic scaler may be used to help remove plaque and tartar while using a water spray to cool the tip of the instrument and keep the mouth irrigated. A hand-held scaler is a metal instrument that has a pointed end and a curved blunt end. The pointed end is used above the gumline, the curved blunt end can be used to get below the gumline without injuring the gums.

Polishers
Once plaque and tartar have been removed, a low-speed rotary electric polishing tool can be used to polish the surface of the tooth. This process uses a mild to moderate abrasive paste that helps smooth uneven areas and leave the surface of your teeth feeling smooth and clean.
