Fillings are the materials used for repairing cavities. These materials are packed inside the hole made in a tooth created by decay. This damaged section of the tooth needs to be removed, cleaned and filled so that it can be restored to its normal function and shape. A filling will also close the portal where bacteria enters the tooth to avoid further decay.
There are a few different kinds of dental materials used as fillings. The filling that is best for you will depend on facets of your dental health that will be explained to you. These different types of fillings include gold, porcelain, composite resin (for matching tooth color), and an amalgam (made up of mercury, silver, copper, tin and/or zinc).
Four Filling Types:
Amalgam fillings are affordable and exceedingly difficult to wear down. Although they are dark in color and as such are not used in areas where they can be easily seen.
Composite resin fillings are the ones used when it is important to match the natural coloration of the existing teeth. The ability to dye the finished filling makes them appealing, but this type is also the most easily worn down, and they can stain.
